Thirty-four major reservoirs across the country remain overflowing, with major and medium-sized reservoirs under the Irrigation Department currently at around 80% capacity, Irrigation Director (Hydrology and Disaster Management) Engineer L.S. Suriyabandara said today.
He told the media that water levels in several rivers have risen after many river basins recorded more than 50mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours.
“Particularly the upper reaches of the Gin Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Kelani Ganga, Yan Oya basins, and some areas in the Batticaloa district received close to 50mm of rain,” he explained.
Despite the increase, Suriyabandara stressed that the water levels have not reached flood conditions.
To prevent further rise in reservoir levels, the spill gates of Deduru Oya, Rajanganaya, Nachchaduwa, Yan Oya, Padhaviya, Lunugamvehera, and Senanayake Samudraya reservoirs will be opened, he confirmed.
