A police constable and a police sergeant attached to the traffic division of the Diyabeduma Police Station were arrested yesterday morning (11) for allegedly demanding a bribe of Rs. 5,000.
The arrests were made following a complaint lodged by a resident of the Attanakadawala area. According to the complaint, the two officers had stopped and inspected the complainant’s motorcycle on December 9 and found that he was riding without a valid driving licence, revenue licence, and while under the influence of alcohol.
Instead of taking legal action, the officers had taken the motorcycle’s insurance certificate and expired revenue licence into their custody and reportedly demanded Rs. 5,000 to return the documents.
Investigators from the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption arrested the two officers on the main road opposite the Diyabeduma Sathipola.
The suspects were subsequently produced before the Hingurakgoda Magistrate’s Court.
