The Cabinet has approved the activation of emergency response components under several foreign-funded infrastructure projects to accelerate the rebuilding of facilities damaged by Cyclone Ditva
Accordingly, the Cabinet has endorsed a proposal presented by President Ranil Wickremesinghe to activate emergency response mechanisms included in World Bank–funded investment projects. Through this initiative, Sri Lanka is expected to receive between US$ 92 million and US$ 112 million to implement the proposed emergency reconstruction activities.
Cyclone Ditva, described as one of the most severe natural disasters in recent years, brought days of heavy rain that triggered flash floods and landslides across the country. The catastrophe resulted in loss of life, mass displacement, extensive damage to public infrastructure, and severe destruction of agricultural land and livelihoods.
Officials said the country must now prioritize reconstruction under a broad framework, focusing on both immediate relief and long-term recovery.
The government added that the international community—including bilateral and multilateral development partners, lending agencies and non-profit organizations—has already begun providing emergency assistance to support Sri Lanka’s recovery efforts.
