In line with the Government’s plan to generate 70% of the country’s electricity from renewable sources by 2030, the Cabinet of Ministers has approved the establishment of two 50 Mega Watt (MW) wind power stations in the Mullikulam area of Mannar, totaling 100 MW.
On February 10, 2025, the Cabinet granted approval to invite proposals from private sector developers to implement the project on a build-own-operate basis, with a monitoring period of 20 years. Requests for proposals were called under an international competitive bidding process, and seven prospective project proposals were submitted.
Following an evaluation based on recommendations by the Cabinet-appointed negotiation committee, the Cabinet approved the proposal presented by the Minister of Power to award the contracts for the two 50 MW wind power stations to the Consortium of Vidullanka PLC & David Pieris Motor Company (Lanka) Limited and WindForce PLC.
The project is expected to contribute significantly to Sri Lanka’s renewable energy targets while expanding sustainable power generation capacity in the Mannar region.
