An Excise Sergeant attached to the Narcotics Bureau of the Excise Department has been arrested by officers of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption (CIABOC) for allegedly soliciting a bribe of Rs. 2 million.
CIABOC stated that the officer had conducted an inspection at a local pharmaceutical manufacturing facility, where cannabis was reportedly being illegally grinding using machinery. He is accused of demanding the bribe to refrain from taking legal action over the alleged offence.
The arrested sergeant is expected to be produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court.
