A supermarket located on Glenfall Road in Nuwara Eliya has been fined Rs. 500,000 by the Nuwara Eliya Magistrate’s Court for selling bottled drinking water above the legally permitted price.
The ruling was delivered yesterday (10 December 2025) after the establishment pleaded guilty to selling a bottle of drinking water for Rs. 130, exceeding the maximum retail price of Rs. 100 set by authorities.
Officials said the court imposed the substantial fine to ensure strict compliance with price regulations and to safeguard consumers from unfair retail practices.
