Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya has insisted that floods can no longer be allowed to disrupt the daily lives of Colombo residents, calling for urgent and coordinated action to protect vulnerable communities
Speaking to the media after the Colombo District Disaster Management Committee meeting at the Colombo District Secretariat, the Prime Minister said that development projects will no longer be permitted to proceed in ways that endanger people or worsen flood risks.
She stressed the need for a district-level flood control plan involving all relevant institutions, noting that such a strategy must be implemented systematically to deliver lasting solutions.
“We are currently discussing measures to address the safety concerns of communities living in vulnerable areas of the Colombo District,” Dr. Amarasuriya added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to flood mitigation and public safety.
