The number of houses completely destroyed across the country due to the disaster caused by Cyclone Ditva has surpassed 5,000, according to the latest report from the Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The report said that 5,325 houses have been fully destroyed, with the highest number of total losses reported from the Kandy District, where 1,815 houses were destroyed. The Nuwara Eliya District recorded the second-highest figure, with 767 homes lost. Other districts reporting significant complete destruction include Kurunegala (476 houses), Puttalam (415 houses), Badulla (404 houses), and Kegalle (300 houses).
Partial damage to homes has also been widespread, with Kandy again recording the highest number at 13,422 partially damaged houses. Other districts with major partial damage include Kegalle (11,601 houses), Ratnapura (7,869 houses), Badulla (7,291 houses), Gampaha (5,830 houses), Puttalam (4,809 houses), Vavuniya (4,135 houses), Nuwara Eliya (3,742 houses), Kurunegala (3,600 houses), Polonnaruwa (3,526 houses), and Anuradhapura (2,249 houses).
The DMC report also highlights the human impact of the disaster. The Puttalam District recorded the highest number of affected individuals, with 349,429 people from 98,146 families impacted. The Colombo District followed with 328,847 individuals from 85,803 families affected. Other districts with large numbers of affected people include Kandy (161,140 individuals from 51,098 families), Trincomalee (86,376 people from 25,999 families), Kurunegala (85,891 people from 25,055 families), Mannar (77,451 people from 23,641 families), Mullaitivu (67,340 people from 22,918 families), and Anuradhapura (72,359 people from 21,948 families).
