The highest rainfall in the past 24 hours has been recorded in the Akuressa area along the Nilwala River, according to Engineer L. S. Suriyabandara, Director of Hydrology and Disaster Management at the Irrigation Department.
Issuing a statement this morning (5), he said the area had received nearly 125 mm of rain. He noted, however, that most other regions experienced normal rainfall levels and that river water levels had not shown any significant rise.
Suriyabandara emphasized that lower rainfall in other areas has also prevented any unusual increase in river levels.
He added that there is no dangerous spillage in the tank system at present, with most reservoirs spilling only at normal levels or at their designated spill thresholds.
However, with forecasts indicating the possibility of increased rainfall, he said the public will be kept informed based on real-time data from river monitoring stations.
He urged the public not to panic and to rely on official announcements rather than unverified rumors.
