The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre has issued an Advisory for Severe Lightning, effective from 3.30 p.m. to 11.30 p.m. on 04 December 2025.
According to the Department of Meteorology, thundershowers accompanied by severe lightning are expected in parts of the Sabaragamuwa and Southern Provinces, as well as the Kalutara District. Authorities warn that temporary localised strong winds may also occur during these thundershowers.
The public is urged to take necessary safety measures to minimise the risk of lightning-related damage.
The Department of Meteorology advises the public to:
- Seek shelter indoors and avoid taking cover under trees.
- Stay away from open areas such as paddy fields, tea estates and open water bodies during thunderstorms.
- Refrain from using wired telephones and plugged-in electrical appliances during lightning activity.
- Avoid travelling in open vehicles, including bicycles, tractors and boats.
- Be cautious of fallen trees and downed power lines.
- Contact local disaster management authorities if emergency assistance is required.
The advisory remains in effect until late evening, and residents in affected areas are urged to remain vigilant.
