A board of inquiry has been appointed to investigate the emergency landing of a Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter that went down yesterday evening near the Lunuwila Bridge while delivering dry and fresh rations to flood-affected communities.
The helicopter was carrying five Air Force personnel, including two pilots, at the time of the incident. With the help of area residents, all injured personnel were quickly rescued and transported to the Maravila Base Hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, the Captain Pilot, Wing Commander Nirmal Siyambalapitiya died from his injuries. A highly experienced aviator, he had accumulated more than 3,000 flying hours during his distinguished service.
The Co-Pilot and the three other personnel survived and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The probe was launched on the directives of Air Force Commander Air Marshal Bandu Edirisinghe as part of the ongoing investigation into the incident.
