The death toll caused by Cyclone Ditva, which swept across Sri Lanka bringing widespread devastation, has risen to 159, according to the National Disaster Management Centre (DMC).
The number of missing persons has increased to 191, while 798 safe centres have been established across the country, currently sheltering 27,494 families a total of 100,898 individuals.
The highest number of fatalities, 52 each, has been reported from the Kandy and Badulla districts. Matale has recorded 12 deaths.
Kandy also reports the highest number of missing persons, with 105 still unaccounted for, followed by 42 from Badulla and 24 from Kegalle.
The DMC further confirms that 774,724 people from 217,263 families have been affected by the cyclone and related adverse weather.
Although Cyclone Ditva has now moved away from Sri Lanka, the Meteorology Department warns that its influence will continue to bring rainfall tomorrow as well.
This disaster has impacted all districts islandwide, marking one of the most widespread weather-related crises in recent years.
