The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has announced that the Kotugoda 220/132/33kV Grid Substation has been taken offline after severe flooding rendered the facility unsafe for operation.
Days of continuous heavy rainfall have caused rapidly rising floodwaters, leaving the entire substation under water. By yesterday evening (29th Saturday), the water level had reached the control panels, prompting immediate safety concerns.
CEB officials said the situation had exceeded all safe operational thresholds, leading to the decision to de-energize and shut down the substation. The move aims to protect the public, safeguard employees working on-site, and prevent damage to critical electrical infrastructure.
According to the CEB, technical teams are on standby and closely monitoring the flood situation. Power restoration efforts will begin once the water level recedes and engineers confirm the site is safe to re-energize.
The CEB apologized for the inconvenience caused and requested the public’s understanding during this emergency.
