A tragic landslide struck the old railway yard road in Nawalapitiya today (28), collapsing onto a house and killing three members of the same family.

According to Nawalapitiya Police, the victims include a woman, her mother-in-law, and a three-month-old infant. The landslide was triggered by the heavy rainfall that has been battering the Nawalapitiya area over the past several days.

Local residents, together with officers from the Nawalapitiya Police, launched extensive rescue efforts, but were unable to save the trapped family members. The bodies have been placed at the Nawalapitiya District General Hospital.

Nawalapitiya Divisional Secretary Ramya Jayasundara stated that five people have died in the area due to the ongoing adverse weather. Nearly 50 families have also been relocated to safe camps as a precautionary measure.
