The U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka has issued a weather alert for U.S. citizens regarding the potential risks posed by Cyclonic Storm Ditwah, currently located approximately 50 km south of Trincomalee.
The embassy has advised U.S. government personnel to exercise caution, limit non-essential travel, and closely monitor local weather updates. It also urged the general public to follow instructions from the Department of Meteorology and local authorities, and to prepare emergency supplies in anticipation of heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Despite the adverse weather, the U.S. Embassy in Colombo remains open, with any operational changes or updates to consular services to be communicated as necessary. According to the alert issued on 28 November, Cyclone Ditwah is moving north-northwestward and is expected to bring widespread heavy rainfall and strong winds across the island. Provinces forecasted to experience very heavy rainfall exceeding 200 mm include Northern, North-central, Central, North-western, Sabaragamuwa, and Western. Rainfall above 150 mm is expected in Trincomalee, Badulla, Galle, and Matara, while other areas may see over 75 mm.
Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant, stay indoors where possible, and take necessary precautions as the storm approaches.
