The Irrigation Department has issued an urgent warning of a major flood risk in several low-lying areas of the Kalu River Basin as heavy rainfall continues and water levels rise rapidly. Officials caution that the situation may worsen over the next few hours, increasing the likelihood of flooding in vulnerable regions.

According to the department, several areas in the Ratnapura District—including Pelmadulla, Nivithigala, Ratnapura, Kuruwita, Ayagama, and Elapatha—are expected to be significantly affected. In the Kalutara District, the areas identified at risk include Kalutara, Ingiriya, Horana, Dodangoda, Millaniya, Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, Madurawala, and Agalawatta.

Authorities warn that flooding, road inundation, and potential flash floods may occur if the rainfall persists. Residents and road users in these regions are urged to remain highly vigilant, move to safer locations if necessary, and follow all instructions issued by disaster management officials and local authorities.
