The heavy rainfall experienced across the region has prompted the Victoria Reservoir to open all six of its automatic spill gates, authorities confirmed today.
According to the engineering office of the reservoir, the Victoria Dam which has a storage capacity of 723 million cubic meters — has begun releasing water through the opened spill gates at a rate of 80,517 cubic feet per second (cusecs). This water is being discharged downstream into the Randenigala Reservoir.
Officials stated that the spill gate activation is an automatic safety response to rising water levels caused by continuous intense rainfall, ensuring the structural stability of the reservoir and the safety of surrounding communities.
Residents living downstream have been advised to remain vigilant as water levels in connected reservoirs and rivers may continue to rise. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
