The Irrigation Department warns that the prevailing flood situation in the lower valley areas of the Deduru Oya Basin may intensify into a major flood due to the ongoing heavy rainfall.
According to the Department, areas within the Divisional Secretariat divisions of Wariyapola, Nikaweratiya, Mahawa, Kobeigane, Bingiriya, Pannala, Chilaw, Arachchikattuwa, and Rasnayakapura are currently experiencing rising flood levels, with conditions worsening gradually.
Residents in these areas have been advised to remain highly vigilant and take necessary precautions.
The Department further stated that with water levels rising in the Kumbukkan Oya Basin, several villages in the Monaragala and Buttala Divisional Secretariat divisions are also at risk of escalating into a major flood situation.
The threat applies particularly to the Grama Niladhari divisions of Nakkala, Kumbukkana, Maduruketiya, Okkampitiya, and Gaminipura.
Authorities urge the public in all affected regions to stay alert and follow official safety instructions.
