The Irrigation Department today (26) issued an Amber-Level Flood Warning for low-lying areas of the Maduru Oya Basin, cautioning that heavy rainfall experienced since last night could lead to flooding over the next 24 hours, Irrigation Department Director of Hydrology and Disaster Management Eng. L. S. Sooriyabandara said.

He said the Hydrology and Disaster Management Division, the warning is valid until 8.00 a.m. on November 27.

Areas at risk include Koralai Pattu (Valachchenai), Koralai Pattu West (Oddamavadi), Koralai Pattu North, Eravur Pattu, Mahaoya, Padiyathalawa, Dehiattakandiya, Dimbulagala, Welikanda and Mahiyanganaya Divisional Secretariat divisions in the Badulla, Ampara, and Batticaloa districts.

Sooriyabandara warned that continuous rainfall may cause water levels to rise in these downstream regions of the Maduru Oya catchment.

Residents in the vulnerable areas have been advised to remain alert and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety. Disaster management authorities have also requested relevant agencies to take immediate action to mitigate possible impacts.
