The Ministry of Defence has dismissed as false and misleading the claims circulating that the “Maa Piya Rekawaranaya” welfare allowance granted to parents of fallen and disabled war heroes has been suspended.
Deputy Defence Minister Maj. Gen. (Retd) Arun Jayasekara told Parliament today (Nov. 24) that the allowance continues without any interruption under the administration of the Ranaviru Sevana Authority, and emphasized that the government has not taken any decision to discontinue the programme.
According to the Ministry, each eligible parent receives a monthly allowance of Rs. 750, but delays may occur if beneficiaries fail to submit their mandatory Life Certificate, required twice a year to verify that recipients are alive.
Of the 32,867 eligible beneficiaries,
- 17,636 submitted their Life Certificates for the first half of the year,
- while only 4,727 have submitted certificates for the second half beginning July.
The Ministry stated that payments to those who have not provided the required verification cannot be processed until their Life Certificates are received.
