Authorities have issued a fresh warning advising fishermen and naval personnel to avoid engaging in marine activities in the Bay of Bengal due to the rapidly developing low-pressure system in the region. The disturbance is intensifying and is likely to develop into a cyclonic storm, creating a high risk of rough seas.
Those currently engaged in fishing activities in the Northern and Eastern sea areas have been urged to leave the region immediately for their safety.
According to the Department of Meteorology, the developing system in the Bay of Bengal is causing a significant increase in sea turbulence, particularly in the northern and eastern maritime zones. As a result, authorities emphasize that no fishing or naval operations should be carried out in these areas until further notice.
Meanwhile, heavy rainfall of over 100 mm is expected in several locations in the Northern and Eastern provinces. Other parts of the island may experience rainfall exceeding 75 mm.
Due to the ongoing intense rainfall, water levels in several rivers continue to rise. The Irrigation Department announced that the flood warning issued for the Attanagalu Oya basin has been extended for another 24 hours.
