The Central Cultural Fund said that the long-awaited lighting project at the Demodara Nine Arch Bridge — a major attraction for both local and foreign tourists — has been postponed indefinitely.
Director General Dr. Nilan Cooray said the delay is due to a dispute over obtaining an electricity line through a privately owned property. The landowner has objected to allowing the power cables required to supply electricity to the transformer installed for illuminating the bridge and its surrounding area.
Dr. Cooray added that alternative methods to secure the electricity line have been identified, but the technical procedures involved are complex. As a result, the project, which was scheduled for completion this month, has been delayed with no new launch date announced.
