The Attorney General has informed Fort Magistrate Neththi Kumara today (19) that a case will be filed in a higher court as the Criminal Investigation Department’s (CID) investigation into former President Ranil Wickremesinghe has reached its final stage.
Deputy Solicitor General Dileepa Peiris, appearing on behalf of the Attorney General, noted that the CID investigation—related to an alleged financial loss of over Rs. 15 million to the government—is nearing completion.
The allegation concerns the former President’s trip to London for the graduation ceremony of his wife, Professor Maithri Wickremesinghe, which is said to have been undertaken as a private visit during his tenure.
Meanwhile, a request made by lawyers to ease the travel ban imposed on former Presidential Secretary Saman Ekanayake, identified as a key individual in the investigation, was withdrawn in court today (19). President’s Counsel Kalinga Indratissa informed the Magistrate that the request—submitted to allow Ekanayake to travel for the birth of his daughter—would not be pursued further.
Following the withdrawal, Magistrate Neththi Kumara dismissed the request. The Deputy Solicitor General appearing for the CID also raised objections to any relaxation of the travel ban.
