Train operations on the Upcountry railway line have been curtailed to run only between Colombo Fort and Nanu Oya after a landslide caused the night mail train from Badulla to derail at both Ohiya and Idalgashinna Railway Stations last evening.
The train, which departed Badulla at 6.00 p.m. for Colombo Fort, veered off the tracks when earth and debris from a landslide covered the railway line. No injuries were reported in the incident.
Railway authorities said the disruption comes barely a day after another derailment at Ohiya, where a train travelling from Kandy to Badulla went off the tracks yesterday morning.
Restoration crews are currently working to clear the affected areas and repair the tracks. Officials have yet to announce when full services on the Upcountry line will resume.
