The government announced that the long-awaited Bandaranaike International Airport expansion will commence in April next year with Japanese assistance.
The Department of Immigration and Emigration has also submitted a new bill to facilitate the future introduction of e-gates, as current laws do not support their implementation. The proposed amendments will be enacted once approved by Parliament.
Meanwhile, the Airport and Aviation Services have invested Rs. 35 million in temporary facilities to ease terminal congestion during the tourist season. Technical and financial evaluations for the expansion project are expected to conclude by early February.
