The government announced that 6,511 Sri Lankans will be sent for employment in Israel this year under a transparent and streamlined selection process.
Officials said there is no delay in sending workers and that the deployment covers various sectors. They noted that during the tenure of the previous minister, around 10,000 workers were sent to Israel’s agricultural sector, leading to complaints from Israeli authorities that many lacked relevant skills and were unable to meet labour demands. As a result, 8,000 of them had to be redirected to other sectors.
The Ministry said job opportunities in agriculture were lost due to past political interference. However, under the current system, only qualified candidates are being selected, with no political involvement.
The Ministry also marked the 40th anniversary of the Foreign Employment Bureau recently, said that the celebration was conducted without any financial burden on recruitment agencies—a departure from previous practices.
