Sri Lanka continues to cement its position as a global leader in eye donation, with the Sri Lanka Eye Donation Society (SLEDS) reporting that 99,950 corneas have been donated to foreign recipients over the past eleven months.
SLEDS official Ayodha Sampath told the Daily Mirror that Sri Lanka’s contributions have supported vision restoration efforts in many countries, highlighting the island’s strong international humanitarian commitment.
Domestically, 80,011 corneas have been distributed to local patients this year, enabling thousands to regain their sight. The Human Tissue Bank has also supplied 13,154 tissues for medical use, supporting a range of surgical procedures.
Enhancing eye care for underserved communities, SLEDS reports that 1,207 free cataract surgeries have been performed at the Eye Hospital, while 21,722 free spectacles have been provided to those in need.
Officials said these efforts — from international cornea donations to local vision care services — reinforce Sri Lanka’s expanding role in global eye health and its dedication to ensuring accessible vision support for all.
