The Department of Irrigation announced that two spill gates of the Deduru Oya reservoir have been opened due to the prevailing heavy rainfall. The gates have been lifted by two feet each, releasing a total water volume of 1,400 cubic feet per second.
Meanwhile, the Polgolla Mahaweli Sluice Engineering Office stated that six spill gates of the Polgolla reservoir were opened early this morning (18). Each gate has been raised by 18 inches, releasing an estimated 9,000 cubic feet of water per second toward the Victoria Reservoir.
Authorities urge residents downstream of the Polgolla Mahaweli Sluice to remain vigilant when using the Mahaweli River, as water levels may rise rapidly due to the ongoing water release.
