A high-level discussion to formulate a systematic programme addressing the issues faced by local big onion farmers was held this morning (17) at the Presidential Secretariat

The meeting was chaired under the patronage of Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K. D. Lal Kantha, along with Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food Security and Cooperative Development Wasantha Samarasinghe.

Minister Lal Kantha said that while paddy farmers have long benefitted from government programmes, no similar systematic plan existed for other crops. “For the first time, the government is preparing a definitive programme to resolve the problems of big onion farmers,” he said, adding that the objective is to protect all farmers and improve their living standards.
