Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a viral video showing a foreign woman being sexually harassed while travelling in a rented tuk-tuk.
The incident, which occurred on 25 October 2025, came to light after the tourist—who had been filming her journey—unknowingly recorded the man approaching her, exposing himself, and attempting to harass her. The footage sparked widespread outrage on social media and drew international criticism.
Police said the Tourism Police Division and Thirukkovil Police Station launched an immediate investigation after the video began circulating online, noting that the incident had brought disrepute to the country. A public appeal for information was also issued to identify the suspect.
Based on information received, officers arrested the suspect this evening.
Police said the man, a 25-year-old resident of Kaluwanchikudi, had been altering his appearance and frequently changing his location in an attempt to evade arrest.
The suspect will be handed over to the Pottuvil Police Station for further investigations.
