The Small and Medium Scale Tourism Entrepreneurs Association has highlighted the urgent need for stricter oversight of Sri Lanka’s tourism sector to ensure visitor safety
Association President Samira Senaka de Silva pointed out that no official body currently exists to monitor or address harassment of tourists. He warned that recent incidents targeting both local and foreign visitors have exposed gaps in protection.
Silva specifically referred to a viral video showing a male youth exposing himself to a female tourist, describing it as a stark example of the risks tourists may face. “This incident raises serious concerns about the safety of female tourists. Authorities must act swiftly to investigate and implement measures that prevent such harassment,” he said.
The association is urging the government to introduce clear regulations and enforcement mechanisms to protect tourists, emphasizing that a well-regulated tourism industry is essential for maintaining the country’s reputation and attracting international visitors.
