Deputy Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development Prasanna Gunasena says the high number of daily train cancellations has severely damaged the public image of Sri Lanka Railways.

Speaking at an event in Maradana, the Deputy Minister said that even a single cancelled train results in significant losses to the country, the community, and individual commuters. He noted that due to these operational failures, both the railway service and its leadership have been viewed negatively by the public.

Gunasena stressed that qualifications limited to academic certificates are insufficient for the railway sector, adding that the public is concerned primarily about reliable service rather than an employee’s reputation or salary.

He said that train drivers and controllers play a crucial role in ensuring service quality.
