SriLankan Airlines’ Airport and Ground Services, the sole ground services provider at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), is expanding its self-check-in service to passengers of customer airlines ahead of the winter travel high season. The peak period is expected to bring over 300,000 tourists to Sri Lanka in December alone.

The initiative follows the recent installation of 20 new self-check-in kiosks at the BIA departure terminal, bringing the total number of kiosks to 28. Developed by the airline’s IT team, the service aims to enhance airport efficiency and improve the overall passenger experience, in line with Sri Lanka’s tourism development efforts.

Since its launch in 2023, the self-check-in facility has steadily grown in popularity, with 15% of SriLankan Airlines’ departing passengers currently using the kiosks. The system allows travellers to bypass queues and independently complete check-in procedures, including seat selection, boarding pass printing, and bag tag generation.

Deepal Pallegangoda, Head of Airport and Ground Services at SriLankan Airlines, said, “We are thrilled to offer the self-check-in option to our customer airlines, whose passengers make up around 60% of all passengers we handle. Our goal is to create a seamless travel experience for everyone departing from Colombo. Our enhanced self-check-in facilities will support the airport’s capacity expansion and reaffirm SriLankan Airlines’ leadership in digital airport solutions in the region.”

Singapore Airlines is the first foreign carrier to adopt the facility for its passengers flying from Colombo, with more airlines expected to join soon.

On any given day, thousands of inbound, outbound, and transit passengers pass through BIA, with SriLankan Airlines’ Airport and Ground Services serving as their primary touchpoint. The airline is gearing up to manage the anticipated surge in winter travellers through digitalisation and improved passenger services.
