The Lanka Teachers' Service Union, led by Deputy Minister of Labour Mahinda Jayasinghe as its Secretary, has urged the Ministry of Education not to proceed with the proposed extension of school hours until 2:00 p.m.
The request was made during a discussion held today between the union, the Secretary to the Ministry of Education, and other officials.
President of the All Ceylon United Teachers' Union, Venerable Yalwela Pannasekara Thero, also voiced opposition to the move, stressing that authorities should consider the teachers’ concerns and withdraw the proposal.
Under the new education reforms, school hours are expected to be extended from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., with classes divided into seven periods for students from Grade 5 to Grade 13.
