Kahawatta Police reported that a 68-year-old woman tragically died this morning (11) after falling from a private bus while attempting to get off.
The incident occurred in the Papol Ella area of Makandura as the bus was travelling from Makandura to Kahawatta. The deceased, Konara Mudiyanselage Punchimanike, was reportedly crushed by the rear tire of the bus, according to an autopsy conducted at Kahawatta Base Hospital.
The bus driver and conductor have been arrested, and the vehicle has been taken into police custody. The post-mortem examination is being conducted by Kahawatta post-mortem examiner R. P. Godage.
Preliminary statements from the driver indicate that the accident occurred when the woman mistakenly tried to disembark before the bus came to a complete stop.
Kahawatta Police are carrying out a full traffic investigation into the incident.
