Former Minister of Tourism and Aviation Prasanna Ranatunga was arrested today (12) by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption and later released on bail by Colombo Chief Magistrate Asanga S. Bodaragama.
He was granted bail with a cash payment of Rs. 100,000 and two sureties of Rs. 5 million each, along with a travel ban.
The arrest relates to an alleged financial irregularity in 2021, where four institutions under the Tourism Ministry reportedly obtained employee insurance through a private brokerage firm, My Insurance Brokers, instead of directly from the Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation.
This arrangement allegedly resulted in an unlawful payment of Rs. 4.7 million to the brokerage firm. The case will be heard again on January 16.
