The Thambuttegama Magistrate’s Court has remanded a primary school principal from Eppawala, Anuradhapura, until November 26, following his arrest with over a kilogram of heroin.
The principal was taken into custody on November 5 after a raid by the Anuradhapura Divisional Criminal Investigation Unit, based on information from a 30-year-old man arrested in the Eppawala Nallamudawa Road area.
Police recovered 1 kilogram and 185 grams of heroin, allegedly belonging to the principal, buried behind a hotel in the Eppawala Edagala area. An electronic scale and polythene sealer used to measure the drugs were also seized.
It was later revealed that the principal’s wife is a member of the Peliyagoda Urban Council representing the National People’s Power Party. Additionally, the principal’s son was arrested last month with 25 grams of heroin.
Following the arrests, the North Central Provincial Education Director suspended the principal, and the Peliyagoda Urban Council member resigned from her position in the wake of the incident.
