A new agreement has been signed to facilitate heart surgeries for 50 Sri Lankan children with congenital heart diseases at Amrita Hospital in Kochi, India.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed yesterday (10) at the Ministry of Health and Media by Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe and Rotary Club of Colombo West President K. P. Nagaraja. The initiative is part of a Rotary Global Project supported by the Rotary Clubs of Colombo West and Cochin West, which will fund the surgeries.
With over 1,000 children currently on waiting lists for cardiac procedures in Sri Lanka, the project aims to provide timely treatment and reduce delays for urgent cases. Patients will be selected based on medical assessments conducted by specialists from the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in Colombo.
This is the second phase of the project; two years ago, 60 Sri Lankan children successfully underwent heart surgeries at Amrita Hospital. The programme also offers training opportunities for Sri Lankan doctors and nurses, while a team of Indian specialists will visit Sri Lanka to train medical staff in identifying congenital heart conditions in unborn children.
