Matara Chief Magistrate Chathuraya Dissanayake yesterday (10) ordered the remand of two students until November 17, following their arrest on suspicion of assaulting a school student near the Matara Railway Station
The suspects, aged 17 and 18 and residing in Kekanadura, Matara, include the son of the Vice Chairman of the Matara Pradeshiya Sabha representing the National People's Power. The 17-year-old has also been placed on probation.
According to police, the incident occurred as the students were returning to the railway station after completing their A/L classes. The student who was assaulted is receiving treatment at Karapitiya General Hospital in Galle, while another victim, the son of a Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna Matara Municipal Council member, is also hospitalized.
Investigations are ongoing to identify and arrest several more students involved in the incident, which was captured on CCTV footage.
The probe is being led under the instructions of Matara Senior Superintendent of Police Wasantha Jayamini Kumara, with a team headed by Matara Headquarters Police Inspector Lasantha Bandara.
