The 2026 budget has failed to address the growing crisis in Sri Lanka’s healthcare workforce, said Specialist Dr. Chamal Sanjeewa, Chairman of the Medical and Civil Rights Doctors’ Trade Union Alliance, warning that continued neglect could worsen the exodus of medical professionals.
Dr. Sanjeewa said that while funds have been allocated for animal welfare, no meaningful measures were introduced to support or motivate young doctors and specialists to remain in public service.
He said that Sri Lanka’s dedicated medical workforce continues to sustain the nation’s globally recognized health standards despite difficult working conditions and limited incentives.
“Doctors serve 24 hours a day in every corner of the country, yet the budget has failed to recognize their contribution or offer any relief. This lack of support risks further weakening the public health system,” he said.
Dr. Sanjeewa added that providing practical incentives — such as housing facilities or tax and transport concessions — could help the government retain skilled medical professionals and stabilize the healthcare sector.
