The government has allocated Rs. 100 million to launch a pilot project in the local authority areas of Kesbewa and Piliyandala aimed at promoting services for pet burial, cremation, and the care of stray animals.

With changing lifestyles in urban and semi-urban areas, pet ownership has been increasing rapidly. However, the lack of proper facilities for the burial or cremation of pets has become a growing concern.

The new initiative seeks to provide respectful and environmentally responsible alternatives for pet owners while addressing the need for a structured system to manage and care for stray animals.

Authorities have also emphasized the importance of collaboration with local councils to ensure effective implementation and sustainability of the program.
