The Mannar District Civil Organizations Coalition has announced that it will continue its protest demanding a halt to wind farm construction in the Mannar District and the prevention of mineral sand mining around Mannar Island.
The coalition noted that nearly 100 days have passed since the continuous protest began, driven by local concerns over the environmental and social impacts of these projects.
Speaking at a media conference yesterday, the coalition welcomed the government’s decision not to construct any new wind farms in Mannar in the future. However, they criticized the lack of action to address problems arising from the existing wind farms in the area.
The coalition stated that their protest will only be suspended if the government promises to provide effective solutions to these ongoing issues and stops the planned mineral sand mining around Mannar Island.
Pastor Marcus, convener of the alliance, emphasized that the community hopes their requests, aimed at protecting local rights, will receive a favorable response.
