Quick action by the Kandy Fire Department helped prevent a major disaster after a fire broke out at a matchbox factory in Pallekele, Kandy, last night (5).
The fire, which erupted in a warehouse where large quantities of matchboxes were stored, posed a high risk of spreading rapidly due to the flammable materials on-site. However, the timely arrival of three fire engines and coordinated efforts by firefighters brought the situation under control before it could escalate further.
Residents in the surrounding area were temporarily evacuated as a precautionary measure.
The Pallekele Police have commenced investigations to identify the cause of the fire and estimate the damages. No injuries have been reported.
