A unique passenger bench made entirely from discarded plastic bottle caps has been installed at the Maradana Railway Station, offering a creative solution to plastic pollution.
The project, titled Bloom Morph, was organized by the Community Engagement Avenue of the ZeroPlastic Society of the University of Kelaniya, with the support of Katana Upcycl and supervision from railway authorities.
The bench was officially handed over to the station on Tuesday (5) by students, in the presence of Station Superintendent Kapila Pushpakumara.
According to the organizers, the project aims to turn plastic waste into useful products, helping reduce pollution along railway tracks and stations.
With thousands of passengers using trains daily, plastic bottles are often discarded irresponsibly, posing a threat to both cleanliness and nearby ecosystems.
By collecting and repurposing bottle caps found at Maradana and nearby areas, students showcased how sustainable innovation and community action can help protect the environment while raising public awareness.
