The Attorney General informed the Supreme Court today (November 4) that 31 individuals have been identified in connection with the attack on the Gota Go Gama protest at Galle Face in May 2022.

State Counsel Sajith Bandara, representing the Attorney General, said that indictments are expected to be filed against the suspects in the near future.

The announcement came as the Attorney General sought a ruling on five fundamental rights petitions filed by activists. The petitioners claimed that the police and other authorities had violated their fundamental rights by failing to prevent the attack on the Gota Go Gama protest on May 9, 2022.

The petitions were heard before a three-judge Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Shiran Gunaratne, and Achala Vengappuli.
