The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has warned the public of a sharp increase in complaints about scams involving money requests made through WhatsApp.
Assistant Superintendent of Police W.G. Jayanethsiri said a significant number of such complaints have been received by the CID in recent days, urging users to be cautious when engaging in WhatsApp groups and chats.
Explaining the scam, he said fraudsters typically obtain the phone number of a well-known or respected individual and send a message that appears genuine — often claiming to be an invitation to a Zoom meeting. Victims are then asked to click on a link and provide a verification code, which in fact allows the scammer to take control of their WhatsApp account.
“Once they gain access, scammers use the compromised account to message the victim’s contacts, asking for money under the pretext of an emergency,” ASP Jayanethsiri said.
He advised the public not to share verification codes or one-time passwords (OTPs) with anyone and to verify any unusual requests for money directly with the person concerned before responding.
