Sri Lanka Customs has reported that vehicle imports have been the largest contributor to Customs revenue this year. By October 14, 2025, a total of 55,447 motor cars had been imported, generating Rs. 474.26 billion in duties.
Other imports included 7,331 goods transport vehicles (Rs. 48.67 billion), 142,524 motorcycles (Rs. 30.37 billion), 15,035 three-wheelers (Rs. 15.10 billion), and 1,679 passenger buses and vans (Rs. 12.66 billion). Collectively, vehicle imports earned Rs. 587.11 billion, accounting for 37% of total Customs revenue to date.
The figures were disclosed at a recent meeting of the Parliament’s Committee on Ways and Means, chaired by MP Wijesiri Basnayake. Officials noted that as of September 30, 2025, Customs had exceeded its revenue target by 17%, collecting Rs. 1,737 billion against an expected Rs. 1,485 billion.
The Customs Department credited strong demand for vehicles as a major factor behind the record collections, highlighting the sector’s continuing impact on government revenue.
