Prime Minister Dr. Harini Amarasuriya said that the University Grants Commission (UGC) has launched a formal investigation into the incident where a professor at the Wayamba University allegedly detained and raped a female student at his hostel.

Speaking to journalists after attending the national ceremony to officially hand over the National College of Technology—constructed with assistance from the Korean government—at the Wayamba University today (03), the Prime Minister said the inquiry will be conducted by a committee in an independent and impartial manner.

Following the ceremony, a group of students, including the current student president of the university, met with the Prime Minister to lodge a complaint about the incident. Two of the students were given the opportunity to submit their concerns to the Prime Minister both in writing and verbally.
