Farmers in the North Central Province claim that they are still unable to secure a fair market price for their big onion harvests.
Growers from the Ikiriwewa, Jayasiripura, Sarubima, and Nikapitiya areas of the Polonnaruwa Elahera Farmers’ Colony have cultivated nearly 500 acres of big onions during this year’s Yala season and have already completed harvesting.
However, farmers say they are struggling to sell their produce at a reasonable price due to the absence of proper purchasing mechanisms.
Meanwhile, Lanka Sathosa CEO D.L. Malage stated that no specific criteria have yet been introduced for the purchase of big onions, further deepening farmers’ concerns over market uncertainty.
