Investigations have revealed that the lawyer arrested on charges of aiding and abetting the shooting of underworld figure Ganemulla Sanjeewa at the Aluthkade Court Complex had maintained close ties with several notorious underworld criminals and drug traffickers, police said.
According to police sources, the lawyer is alleged to have had strong connections with Panadura Kudu Salindu and Shiran Basik Daroon, both key figures in the country’s drug trade. Investigators have further uncovered that the lawyer maintained close contact with Daroon, a leading member of Kehelbaddara Padme’s gang who is currently hiding in Dubai.
Police further revealed that the same lawyer had represented Shiran Basik in legal action against the police over the demolition of an unauthorized hotel on the Mount Lavinia beach, allegedly owned by the drug trafficker. The lawyer had also appeared in court on behalf of Panadura Kudu Salindu, another major underworld leader.
Investigations have found that the lawyer provided logistical support to Ishara Sewwandi, who carried out the shooting of Ganemulla Sanjeewa, allegedly under instructions from Daroon in Dubai.
Police suspect that the lawyer had knowingly assisted underworld criminals in orchestrating the killing. The suspect has been charged with aiding and abetting murder, following revelations made during the interrogation of Kehelbaddara Padme.
